GRUMA Announces the purchase of MEXIFOODS SPAIN for 15 Million U.S. Dollars

Madrid, Spain, on June 11th, 2014. - “I am proud to announce that a few days ago we bought Mexifoods Spain for 15 million U.S. dollars,” said Gruma Chairman and CEO Juan González Moreno. He announced this to a group of businessmen and authorities of Spain, in the framework of the state visit made by President of Mexico, Enrique Peña Nieto on his tour through Europe.

Mexifoods is a Spanish leader in the production and sale of wheat tortillas, corn tortillas, chips, tortilla chips and Mexican sauces with 25% market share.

We have confidence in the future of Spain and therefore we have designed a short-term strategy that will take us to invest $35 million dollars in the expansion and modernization of our plant, tripling its production capacity to supply from Spain the Iberian peninsula, South of France, Italy, Portugal and Malta.

At the same, he noted that “with this acquisition Gruma consolidates its position in the third largest tortilla maker in Europe, and lays the foundation for sustained growth in the region.

The Mexican businessman also noted that Mexifoods products are sold through major supermarket chains in Spain, in the Hotel, Restaurant, and Cafeteria (HORECA) chain, and in more than 20 countries in Europe.

González Moreno also mentioned that Gruma began operations in Europe in 2000 with the construction of its first tortilla plant in England. It currently operates nine plants where it makes tortillas, wraps, chips, flat breads and corn grits, strategically located in the United Kingdom, Holland, Italy, Russia, Ukraine and Turkey.
